For years, Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Matt Simpson has been in-charge of prosecuting child sex abuse cases in Baldwin County (Alabama), including teachers who are accused of sexually abusing students.
However, according to a source familiar with the Baldwin County District Attorney’s (DA’s) Office, Matt Simpson has been “removed” from cases related to child sex abuse and will no longer be assigned to those cases in the future. Sources also report that Simpson has changed office locations, and IPJ has received unconfirmed reports indicating that ADA Kristi Hagood may have taken over some of Simpson’s cases.
The news comes on the heels of an Independent Press Journal (IPJ) report on questionable fundraising practices between the Baldwin County Board of Education (BCBE) and the United Way of Baldwin County (UWBC), a charity run by Simpson’s wife.
IPJ reached out to Matt Simpson, who wouldn’t comment, saying only, “All questions you have should go through District Attorney Robert Wilters.”
It is uncommon for political candidates not to answer questions about their own job title and responsibilities while also running for public office.
IPJ reached out to the DA’s office, but nobody was available for comment.
Matt Simpson, a Republican, is running for Alabama House of Representatives in District 96. Simpson will face-off against Democrat Maurice Horsey in the November 2018 elections.
